Patchy hair loss

Several conditions produce small areas of hair loss, while others affect larger areas of the scalp. Common causes of patchy hair loss are:

  • Trichotillomania (the habit of twisting hair out)
  • Traction alopecia (thinning tight braids or from ponytails)
  • Alopecia areata (patches of baldness that usually grow back)
  • Tinea capitis (fungal infection)
